Compliment vs. complement: Do you know the difference?
Compliment – an expression of praise, admiration, or congratulation
Complement – a thing that completes or brings to perfection
I’m talking about complements here, specifically complementary colors. These are colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. They complete each other, enhance and perfect each other. These are examples from my fall garden.
yellow / purple
red / green
blue / orange
And here is a little color wheel with a black and white center. (The thumbnails are clickable to enlarge them.)

I love our local farmers market: There are booths set up on a wide front lawn in town with about 25 vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and eggs, prepared food, bakery goodies, plants, pottery, and other hand-made items. Often there is the live music of a local band or a demonstration by a local artisan. It’s a great place to run into neighbors and friends every Friday afternoon through the summer.
Recently we visited a farmers market in Hawaii. No out-door venue here. Nope, it’s in the mall, right outside of Macy’s, both upstairs and down.
Vendors sell all manner of Hawaiian delicacies as well as the regular produce. Several tables offered pigs ears, bitter melon and exotic fruits as well as some things I didn’t recognize. Some of the best mangoes I have ever eaten were purchased here.
pig ears and other prepared delicacies
bitter melons and eggplant
apple bananas and dragon fruit
green onions and herbs
anthurium blossoms and beautiful floral arrangments
And we got to watch a raku potter throwing pots in his store front. All in all it was a wonderful experience.
