His Eye is on the Sparrow

Perhaps you know the song.  And perhaps you are familiar with the passage in the Bible that reads: “Are not two sparrows sold for a cent?  And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father… Therefore do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:29, 31)

fallen sparrowThe other day as we drove down the hill into town, my eye caught sight of movement.  It was a tiny bird, a sparrow fluttering furiously.  He was upside down, hanging from the telephone wire, somehow caught by one foot in the cables strung high overhead.  We watched as he struggled to free himself and as we drove on, feeling oh so helpless, I wondered if he would succeed.  Alas, the answer was sadly clear on our way back home.  The little body was still hanging from the wire, fluttering no longer, unable to break free.

My heart was sad to see him hanging there, and still is every time I drive by.  But I was reminded of our great God who cares even for the tiny sparrow so much that He knows when one falls.  How sad He must be to see that little body hanging there, His precious creation snared and dying.  Yet how much more He cares for me, and for you because we are made in His image and are more valuable than many sparrows.
