The Peony Farm

Frost Hill FarmPeonies have long held a special place in my heart.  My mother had them when we kids were growing up and I remember their luxurious beauty and sweet, delicate fragrance.  We used to pick the ones that were bent over and touching the ground; we shook off their compliment of ants, and brought them in to grace the table.  To this day, when I see peonies, I think of my mom.

I recently heard about a peony farm just up the road in Belmont, Vermont.  A friend and I decided to go check it out.  It was a short trip, just a few miles away, and a picture perfect New England day: bright blue sky, warm sunshine, small puffy clouds, a gentle breeze and pleasant temperatures.  And the blooms were glorious!  It seems the farm is only really open in June for the blooming season when their fields are rife with color.  And we were just in time.

Frost Hill FarmThere were single blooms and double blooms, some that looked like roses and poppies and pom poms.  They ranged in color from white to pink to cherry red to burgundy.  There were pale yellow ones and salmon-colored ones, and even some multicolored ones.  And they were all blooming in this idyllic place.  I came home with two that I hope will over-winter well and bloom next Spring.

Here is a small sampling of the many varieties we saw.
