A Penny

Pennies don’t seem worth much anymore.  There is even a campaign to get rid of them since they are seen as a nuisance by some.  But I found one that was pretty powerful today.  No, it wasn’t worth any more than most of them, but it brought to mind very lovely memories of my mom.

When I was growing up, she often said a little rhyme when we’d find a penny on the ground:

See a penny, pick it up and all the day you’ll have good luck.

I know that picking up a penny really doesn’t change the way the day goes.  All it does is make you slightly richer.  But it was a delight to remember my mom in the process and reflect on happy times.

There are a few things that almost always have memories of my mom attached: bleeding hearts, peonies, There is a Balm in Gilead, to name some. At first they would catch me unawares. Now I revel in them as long as possible.
