Road Trip

Cabot Creamery, Cabot, VermontMy friend Jean and I took a trip today to the Cabot Creamery in Cabot, Vermont. My brother wanted some cheese and I did some of my own shopping too while I was there. Cabot Creamery’s seriously sharp cheddar is our very favorite and it is hard to find locally. Jean couldn’t remember having been there so we went together to take in the excellent $2 tour and video. The gift shop has many cheese samples out for tasting and most of their products for sale. They also offer some other Vermont related items including cook books, pottery, locally made sauces and gifts.

True Value Hardware in Cabot, VermontAfter snacking our way through the shop, we asked about a place for lunch. The clerk recommended the local hardware store. Yes, you read correctly. Apparently the only lunch place in town closed and was put up for sale recently and someone opened a small luncheonette in the back of the hardware store to fill the need of the locals for a lunch spot. The hardware store was the old fashioned variety where local farmers gather to shoot the breeze.

You can weigh your nails out the old fashioned way and find a good assortment of basic supplies. And in the very back is a small room with a kitchen offering hot dogs, burgers, breakfast, and a daily special – today was spaghetti, salad and garlic bread.

True Value Hardware in Cabot, VTJean and I decided to have breakfast: she had fried eggs, sausage and toast; I had French toast with real maple syrup of course. It was wonderful and inexpensive. The cook said she is kept quite busy with customers and would welcome a buyer for the little inn next door to take off some of the pressure.
